We all feel tired from time to time. Some of us might even feel as though we could take a nap at any opportunity. Exhaustion is different, it’s serious and could ruin your life.
Tiredness is typically within our control, whereas exhaustion is out of our control. This short test will help you identify your level of fatigue, simply answer Yes or No to each statement:
- I have sores in my mouth and or my lips are dry
- My mind feels fuzzy
- I’m easily irritated
- I wake with a headache most days
- I’m not motivated to exercise
- My reflexes are less sharp
- I’m not sleeping well
- I have little appetite for healthy foods whilst craving junk food and or alcohol
- My immunity is weak
- I’m forgetful
Any of these can be symptoms of exhaustion.
If you answered Yes to three or less, you should be able to take steps to live more healthily. Within a few days, with mild exercise, good food and sleep you’ll be back to your normal self.
If you answered Yes to five or more make an appointment to see your doctor or speak to a Sleep Coach and start making whatever lifestyle changes you can in the meantime. Don’t assume that this phase will pass, or fool yourself into believing that you are superhuman and with a high tolerance for stress. The symptoms say otherwise.
There are numerous high achievers who learned the hard way that we all have limits. Hospitalisation is more common than we might realise, although the apparent cause may be a consequence of exhaustion, such as car accident, stroke or a heart attack. Good health requires moderation in all things. Working with less than 12 hours off between shifts may seem normal but it tips the balance away from rest and recovery. Balance is crucial, particularly in the three components of a healthy lifestyle:
- Eating well
- Moving well
- Sleeping well
Any prolonged period neglecting these principles or even taking one of the three to excess will ultimately lead to ill health, instead consider our 5 Tips to Feel More Refreshed.
